Variable selection in the functional linear concurrent model.

چکیده
We propose methods for variable selection in the context of modeling the association between a functional response and concurrently observed functional predictors. This data structure, and the need for such methods, is exemplified by our motivating example: a study in which blood pressure values are observed throughout the day, together with measurements of physical activity, location, posture, affect or mood, and other quantities that may influence blood pressure. We estimate the coefficients of the concurrent functional linear model using variational Bayes and jointly model residual correlation using functional principal components analysis. Latent binary indicators partition coefficient functions into included and excluded sets, incorporating variable selection into the estimation framework. The proposed methods are evaluated in simulations and real-data analyses, and are implemented in a publicly available R package with supporting interactive graphics for visualization. Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Parameters in Generalized Functional Linear Model
Sometimes, in practice, data are a function of another variable, which is called functional data. If the scalar response variable is categorical or discrete, and the covariates are functional, then a generalized functional linear model is used to analyze this type of data. In this paper, a truncated generalized functional linear model is studied and a maximum likelihood approach is used to esti...
متن کاملPenalized Bregman Divergence Estimation via Coordinate Descent
Variable selection via penalized estimation is appealing for dimension reduction. For penalized linear regression, Efron, et al. (2004) introduced the LARS algorithm. Recently, the coordinate descent (CD) algorithm was developed by Friedman, et al. (2007) for penalized linear regression and penalized logistic regression and was shown to gain computational superiority. This paper explores...
متن کاملLinear Models for Functional Responses
In this second chapter on the functional linear model, the dependent or response variable is functional. We first consider a situation in which all of the independent variables are scalar and in particular look at two functional analyses of variance. When one or more of the independent variables is also function, we have two possible classes of linear models. The simpler case is called concurre...
متن کاملVariable selection for functional linear models with functional predictors and a functional response
We consider a variable selection problem for functional linear models where both multiple predictors and a response are functions. Especially we assume that variables are given as functions of time and then construct the historical functional linear model which takes the relationship of dependences of predictors and a response into consideration. Unknown parameters included in the model are est...
متن کاملGender-based Differences in Associations between Attitude and Self-esteem with Smoking Behavior among Adolescents: A Secondary Analysis Applying Bayesian Nonparametric Functional Latent Variable Model
Background: Different patterns of gender-based relationships between attitude toward smoking and self-esteem with smoking behavior have reported. However, such associations may be much more complex than a simply supposed linear relationship. We aimed to propose a method of providing hand details on the total and gender-based scenarios of the relationships between attitude toward smoking and sel...
